Graphitint is an exciting range of tinted graphite that combine the drama and creativity of graphite drawings with a hint of soft, subtle colour. This range is ideal for mixed media work and the rich earthy tones are a must for landscape and wildlife artists. Soft and smooth, these colours can be blended to produce an endless array of soft hues and can be modified or removed with a soft eraser and clean water. Used dry, Graphitint produces just a suggestion of colour but add water to wash out the lines and experience an explosion of vibrant colours. Lightfastness is very important for artists and Derwent takes this matter very seriously, the Graphitint range has 19 of the 24 colours rated 6 and above, which is considered very lightfast. The Graphitint XL Blocks are specially formulated water soluble blend of Graphite tinted with colour in XL format for broad coverage, bold marks, agile lines and powder texture.

View Colour Chart to see Lightfastness rating (LF) = 3,4 – FAIR, MODERATE | 5,6 – GOOD, VERY GOOD | 7,8 – EXCELLENT. Derwent uses the Blue Wool Scale (ISO 105) to evaluate lightfastness. Lightfastness refers to the chemical stability of a pigment under long exposure to light. A scale of 1-8 is obtained, with values of 6 or higher being considered to be highly lightfast and, under museum conditions, will not fade for 100+ years.

I enjoyed the Graphitint set a lot. The combination of graphite and pigment produces some interesting and subdued effects and you can combine them no problems with regular watercolours for when you really want a painted area to pop. The graphite in the paint makes for a very ‘heavy’ pigment that tends to sit in an area rather than spread like regular watercolours. This is good if you want to lay down controlled paint layers. Conversely, if you tilt your painting surface and wet it a lot, the graphitints will run spectacularly with some interesting effects like cloudbursts. It’s a worthy addition to an artist’s arsenal.
