Product Review: Stabilo Carbothello Pastel Pencils

It is no secret that I am a pencil addict, so it was with great anticipation that I awaited the arrival of the Stabilo Carbothello pastel pencils on the Artsavingsclub pencil rack.  They definitely did not disappoint when they finally found their way into my greedy hands!

CarbOthello Pastel Single Pencils – Stabilo

German-made, Stabilo Carbothello Pastel Pencils are world-famous for their quality, high pigmentation with excellent lightfastness, and being partially water-soluble, offering the artist a wider range of use. The opaque, chalk-pastel colours blend beautifully and erase easily. They can be dry-blended or smudged with either the fingertips or a blending stump to create a variety of artistic effects. And due to their high pigmentation, dramatic results can be achieved on dark backgrounds and delicate papers.

Partially water-soluble, the pigments can also be worked with brush and water, the contours remaining visible. The white pastel pencil is especially ideal to lighten or highlight areas or outlines.  The diameter of the lead is large and semi-soft but can be sharpened to a fine point for details and lettering.

Product features:

  • Wonderfully dry and dusty stroke, just like charcoal.
  • High pigmentation – great luminosity and opacity.
  • Excellent colour-fastness and colour brilliance.
  • Wooden shaft protects the lead from breaking.
  • Mix, blend and smudge dry.
  • Partially water soluble; contours remain visible.
  • Lead diameter: 4.4 mm.
  • Available in 60 brilliant colours.

50 Shapes of Pastel: An introduction to Pastels (Part 1)

Its fair to say I’ve fallen for pastels hook, line and sinker.  I do believe we each have a medium that is meant for us.  From the moment I first put this medium to paper I knew I had found ‘my’ medium, the medium that finally magically set my inner-artist free.  Pastels are renowned for being bright and intensely pigmented, easy to use and popular in many genres.
