Gesso helps you create the perfect base for your artwork on virtually any surface. It provides you with an absorbent surface after drying, which makes it the perfect base for not only acrylic paint, but for oil paint as well. Gesso can be thinned with water and applied either in thin layers or one thick layer to create more texture.
Because gesso is based on acrylic resin, you can easily mix it with your favorite acrylic colours to add some color to your background. To create lighter pastel colours, White gesso is the perfect mixing base. Use Black gesso for rich, dark colours. If you want your colour to stay virtually the same as in the tube, we recommend using the Transparent gesso! You can also use Transparent gesso on its own to show the surface you’re working on.

Black and White Gesso are ready-to-use formulations for painting on most surfaces. They are flexible and can be applied in thin layers to conform to a variety of textures without cracking. Sandable Hard Gesso is formulated with 100% acrylic polymer emulsion and can be sanded to provide surfaces that are smoother and more even than those created using regular gesso. (Item# 3551)

Always spray thin coats at a distance of 20 cm from the painting surface. It is recommended to wait at least two hours before applying additional layers. At least two gesso layers are required for oil paintings.
This student-quality Daler Rowney Graduate Gesso Primer has been specially formulated to provide a good value option and is ideal for use to prime large surfaces in internal environments. Used neat to seal semi absorbent paint surfaces like unprimed canvas, for both acrylic and oil painting. Produces matt white surface with a slight texture or tooth.
The gesso primer will ensure the paint does not soak into the surface of the canvas and leave a patchy image. If you are to paint on boards such as Masonite and MDF, then you can exploit the primer or gesso properties by putting it on with a coarse house-painting brush. You can imitate a canvas surface by laying gesso down in one, and then the other direction. Alternatively, try stippling the primer on for a different texture.

Highly adhesive, this primer is ideal for directly sealing all semi-absorbent surfaces before applying colour – both acrylics and oils. Suitable for both interior and exterior applications. It dries quickly to produce a matt surface with a slight tooth that is easily sanded for highly detailed work. If used as a ground for acrylics, one coat is normally sufficient, but up to three coats may be required for oil colour.

Zellen White Acrylic Gesso is a quick-drying acrylic primer similar to white acrylic paint, only thinner and it dries hard, making the surface stiffer. Gesso prepares (or “primes”) the surface for painting, making the surface slightly textured and ready to accept acrylic paint. Without gesso, the paint would soak into the weave of the canvas.
Apply Zellen’s White Gesso Primer to prepare your surface for acrylic or oil painting. This primer, recommended to be applied in layers, has a matt finish and slight tooth.
