1. Water-based?
Yes. Robert Oster inks are entirely water-based. They are specifically formulated to have a safe, smooth, and fluid consistency that ensures ideal capillary action through standard fountain pen feeds.
2. Dye-based?
Yes. They are 100% dye-based. The brilliant colours and famous multi-chromatic shading traits (like Barossa Grape or Fire & Ice) come from liquid colorants that dissolve completely in the water matrix. They do not contain physical pigment particles.
3. Waterproof?
No. Because they are pure dye-based inks, they have little to no water resistance. If water or a watercolour wash touches the dry ink line, the dyes will readily reactivate, lift, and bleed across the paper.
Note for Artists: While this means they aren’t good for waterproof outlines, it makes them a favorite for ink-and-wash sketching, as they display beautiful, dramatic underlying color hues when brushed out with clean water.
4. Lightfast?
Standard/Low. Like nearly all traditional dye-based fountain pen inks, they are not rated as lightfast or archival. If written documents are left exposed to direct sunlight or prolonged UV light, the color will slowly fade over time. They are perfect for closed notebooks and journals but not intended for framed wall art.
5. Contain any Resins?
No. Robert Oster inks do not contain shellac, acrylic emulsions, or heavy resins. They are non-toxic, eco-friendly, and engineered strictly to be “well-behaved”. They will not form a hard, plastic-like clog inside a fountain pen feed, making them incredibly safe and easy to clean out with just regular water.
