Norman and Hill Ltd. was founded in London on June 6, 1921 by British Army Colonel Disney, William Rounce and Posseen Hill. Years later, the company changed its name to Filofax.
FILE OF FACTS
The first personal organiser was created: a high-quality leather binder with ring mechanism and flexible loose-paper inserts – a “File of Facts” that would eventually give the company its name.
KEEPING INFO SAFE
During World War II, the Filofax offices were destroyed. Key information about customers and suppliers was stored in the organiser that secretary Grace Scurr took home every night, enabling Filofax to keep operating.
THE SYMBOL OF AN ERA
The popularity of Filofax organisers grew enormously during the 1980’s due to its association with the Yuppie culture, making the brand an iconic symbol of the decade.
NEW HORIZONS
The Filofax product portfolio evolved from business diaries to multiple tools to help achieve work life balance. Filofax started its international expansion, growing in Europe, North America and Asia.
A CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION
Filofax celebrated its first century with the launch of the Centennial Collection, a limited-edition capsule specially designed to pay homage to the brand history with today’s user in mind.

Filofax Planner Systems Explained
Filofax is the original ring-bound organiser – a flexible system of covers and inserts designed to grow with you. You can personalise everything from the layout of your weekly pages to the colour of your dividers and the paper in your sketching section. It’s paper planning, levelled up.
There are three main types of Filofax systems:
Organisers
This is the classic ring-bound format that made Filofax famous. It opens flat and uses a 6-ring mechanism to hold a wide variety of inserts. It’s fully customisable and refillable year after year.
Clipbooks
A more relaxed, lightweight option that lies completely flat when open – even bends backwards. Great for those who want a flexible planner that doubles as a notebook. It uses the same 6-ring system, so it fits standard Filofax organiser refills for its size.
Notebooks
Not to be confused with a traditional notebook. The Filofax Notebook features a clever movable page system on a wire spine, giving you the freedom of ring-bound inserts without the bulk. Pages can be added, removed, and repositioned.
Understanding the Sizes (and What Fits What)
Filofax planners come in a few core sizes, and each has its own set of compatible refills and accessories. Here’s a breakdown to help you pick the right one:
Organiser & Clipbook Sizes
The Filofax Organiser is a structured, refillable planner with a classic cover and built-in pockets while, the Filofax Clipbook is a more flexible, lightweight option that lies flat and bends back. Essentially, they are different versions of the same thing, and their inserts and refills are the same.
Inserts are not cross-compatible between A5 and Personal sizes. Trust us – you’ll know when you try to jam an A5 page into a Personal ring…
Notebook Sizes
The Filofax Refillable Notebook offers the freedom of a traditional notebook with a clever twist – its unique wire-binding system lets you add, remove, and rearrange pages with ease. Pages lie perfectly flat and can be repositioned without tearing, making it ideal for brainstorming, sketching, or list-making on the fly.
