Compressed charcoal is a solid piece of carbonized wood that produces deep tones with a different texture to graphite. Its naturally water soluble makeup allows artists to create interesting line and wash effects. Derwent Compressed Charcoal Blocks are made of pure charcoal. Square shaped, you can use the side for wide sweeping strokes, or use the ends to create finer lines.

Often used for life studies charcoal is considered very traditional. Encase it in wood and suddenly you have something much more contemporary – Derwent Charcoal Pencils! They will give you great control over your drawings but keep all those traditional charcoal effects that you love, with less mess!
