With Luminance 6901, Caran d’Ache has created a lightfast colour pencil with a creamy, generous lead in a range of balanced colours with a high pigment concentration. The round cases are made of environmentally friendly California Cedar with the ends colour-coded to the lead. Formulated using finely ground pigments chosen for their purity, intensity, and resistance to UV rays. The creamy application and colour intensity allow for unlimited mixed media combinations. Combine with SUPRACOLOR® Soft Aquarelle for wash drawings and watercolour effects in mixed techniques, or PABLO® pencils for details, hatching and to colour numerous media.
The luminance 6901® range comprises 100 different shades. Caran d’Ache also completes its portfolio with a ‘Portrait’ assortment certified 100% lightfast. This assortment includes flesh colours, warm and cold shades, as well as dark tones, making it the ideal tool for creating ultra-realistic artistic portraits of both people and animals.

Absolutely love these pencils! The quality is incredible and they’re very pigmented. The leads have a higher wax ratio so they’re on the softer side which means they’re amazing for blending but can struggle to hold a very sharp point – if that’s your need, then Pablo’s would be a better fit for your style.
I tend to combine them with watercolors and they’re great for layering over the watercolors to sharpen small details and increase contrast.
Only drawback is that they’re thicker than most pencils so you’ll need a sharpener that can handle that.

The Rolls-Royce of professional colour pencils. Lightfast, colourfast and they go onto pencil crayon papers brightly. They layer and blend very well. I do still prefer my Polychromos pencils because it’s easier to get details, but I like the white from the Caran d’Ache Luminance pencils along with a couple of other shades. Caran d’Ache and Polychromos offer single pencil purchases so you can buy the ones you use up. The Caran d’Ache blending stick is the best one out there for blending/burnishing too. These pencils are wax-based so they produce a bloom over time especially with darker colours, hence my preference for Polychromos (oil based).

I use these in brown and red earth colours to draw portraits on drawing paper which I tint with watercolor washes. I love the color and the quality of these pencil. I prefer honeycomb pencils above the rounded shaped ones though. It also fits in the heavier pencil extender, which is harder to handle.
