Saunders Waterford is an exquisite watercolour paper, traditionally made on a cylinder mould machine. Made using 100% cotton, the highest quality papermaking material, to high archival standards. Each sheet is buffered with calcium carbonate to help protect your finished pieces of work from discolouration caused by acids present in atmospheric pollution.

Its attractive surface is created using natural woolen felts that give it a distinctive random texture. The surface is sized in gelatine making it strong and resilient to scrubbing, and other rough treatments. This is a superior quality watercolour paper made by St Cuthberts Mill and comes with the Royal Watercolour Society’s endorsement.

Understanding the 3 surfaces or textures of watercolour paper

Rough – A pronounced, varied texture, great for a textured loose feel.

Cold-pressed (NOT) – It’s the paper texture in-between rough and hot-pressed paper, having a slightly textured surface this paper is sometimes called NOT.

Hot-pressed (HP) – Watercolour paper with a very smooth surface and almost no tooth. Good for painting detailed paintings and creating very smooth washes.

The Not stands for “Not Hot pressed”

1 review for Saunders Waterford Watercolour Blocks, Rolls & Sheets – St Cuthberts Mill

  1. Azariah

Paper is part of an artwork, and good quality paper is one of the most important ingredients for good paintings. I like the suede-like feel, and creamy-white colour of the paper. It is very absorbent, and when stretched, does not buckle when applying multiple glazes. It doesn’t buckle too much when painting alla prima. I have used other brands like Arches, but this is my favourite brand.
