Vincent van Gogh was one of the great Post-Impressionist painters. After admitting himself to the Saint-Paul Asylum following a severe mental health crisis, he recuperated by painting the asylum’s garden. We are honoured to partner with Getty to bring Van Gogh’s stirring Irises study to our collection.

Photographer Gérard Degeorge has travelled the world, capturing grand pieces of architectural design through the scope of his lens. Our Granada Turquoise design comes from his vast collection of photography. It is reminiscent of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Anemone – William Kilburn

The eternal appeal of a floral design is captured in the work of Irish illustrator William Kilburn. The artist behind William Curtis’ book on botany, Flora Londinensis, Kilburn was also a designer and printer of calico. His seaweed motifs were so iconic that he presented a dress in the pattern to Queen Charlotte!

Kara-ori – Japanese Kimono

Showcasing silk dyed with beni (the pigment extracted from safflower petals) and lacquered in gold, this kimono design dates to the Edo period (1615–1868), when it was used as a costume for the theatrical style known as Noh. Karaori refers specifically to the exquisitely embroidered traditional woman’s kimono that Noh theatre was known for.

Cezanne’s Terracotta Pots and Flowers

Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) was a French painter who is regarded as one of the greatest of the post-Impressionists. Terracotta Pots and Flowers saw Cézanne enter a new era of still life painting. Here he arranges everyday objects including a pitcher with potted geraniums inside the greenhouse at his father’s estate near Aix-en-Provence.

Klimt, The Kiss

The Kiss (1907–1908), the Gustav Klimt painting reproduced here, represents the pinnacle of his “golden phase.” Oil and gold leaf combine to create shapes and colours reminiscent of the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau styles. The lustrous palette and intricate patterns make the work a great masterpiece of the period.

Spring – Lawrence Alma-Tadema

In his Spring painting (1894), Lawrence Alma-Tadema represented the Victorian custom of sending children to collect flowers on May Day. By placing the scene in ancient Rome, he suggested the festival’s great antiquity through architectural details, dress, sculpture and musical instruments based on Roman originals.
