Its origins trace back to 1858 in Étival-Clairefontaine, a village in France’s Meurthe Valley, where paper-making had already flourished since the 16th century. Benefiting from local textile resources, the company quickly became a key industrial presence in the region, later expanding into envelopes in 1880 and notebooks soon after. Today, Clairefontaine continues to manufacture paper, envelopes, and notebooks at the same site, using advanced machinery capable of producing vast quantities efficiently. While it sources pulp globally to ensure optimal quality—combining long Scandinavian fibers for strength and Brazilian eucalyptus fibers for smoothness and opacity—it also emphasizes sustainability through its Everbal subsidiary, which produces fully recycled paper without bleaching or dyeing.
