About the Calligraphy Ink Range
The Tom’s Studio Calligraphy Ink range is an acrylic-based line developed specifically for dip pen calligraphy, hand lettering and illustration. Unlike water-based fountain pen inks, acrylic calligraphy inks are pigment-dense and permanent once dry, making them the preferred choice for pointed pen work, envelope addressing, wedding stationery and illustration intended to hold its colour over time.
Each bottle holds 30ml of ink and is presented in a recyclable glass bottle with a gold-foiled antique laid paper label, in keeping with Tom’s Studio’s emphasis on considered packaging. A pipette is included with every bottle, allowing for controlled and clean ink transfer to an ink pot or nib reservoir.
Ink Properties
All inks in the calligraphy range are acid-free and non-toxic. The inks are lightfast and permanent when dry, and completely water resistant, making them suitable for artwork and correspondence intended to last. According to Tom’s Studio’s own ink FAQ, the Black, White, Silver, and Gold variants carry particularly high lightfastness ratings due to their differing composition. The pH range for the range is 2.4 to 8.4.
The Black India Ink variant contains shellac, which provides additional resistance when layering other inks on top. For metallic colours such as Gold and Silver, settling of pigment particles may occur in the bottle; shaking well before use ensures the ink is fully mixed.
Compatibility
All Tom’s Studio Calligraphy Inks are compatible with the Tom’s Studio Flourish, Carrot and Bloom calligraphy pens, as well as standard dip pens and brushes. These inks are not suitable for use in fountain pens or refillable fineliner pens, as the acrylic base will clog internal reservoirs.
