Description
Explore the timeless beauty of alternative photographic printing with the Clairefontaine Cyanotype Kit. Inspired by a photographic process developed in the 19th century, cyanotype printing transforms simple objects, botanical materials, and creative arrangements into striking blue-and-white images using the natural power of sunlight.
Cyanotype is a traditional photographic technique that relies on light-sensitive iron compounds to create distinctive Prussian blue prints. The process begins by preparing a photosensitive solution using the two supplied chemicals and water. This solution is then applied to a suitable surface, such as the included FONTAINE watercolour paper, using the provided brush.
Once the coated paper has dried in a suitable light-protected environment, plants, leaves, flowers, or other objects can be arranged on its surface to create a composition. Exposure to sunlight or another ultraviolet light source initiates the photographic reaction, allowing exposed areas to develop their characteristic blue colour while areas protected from light remain lighter. After exposure, the paper is rinsed with water to reveal the finished cyanotype image.
The kit includes 10 sheets of premium 300 gsm satin FONTAINE watercolour paper, providing a substantial surface for experimenting with different compositions and printing techniques. The included 20 ml pipette allows for controlled measurement and transfer of liquids, while the application brush makes it easy to coat the paper with the prepared solution.
To make the creative process accessible and enjoyable, Clairefontaine includes a comprehensive 16-page illustrated booklet featuring step-by-step instructions, practical advice, helpful tips, and creative inspiration. Available in French, English, German, and Spanish, the booklet provides guidance for artists discovering cyanotype printing for the first time.
Whether you’re interested in botanical art, alternative photography, handmade stationery, or experimental printmaking, the Clairefontaine Cyanotype Kit offers an engaging way to explore the relationship between light, chemistry, and artistic expression. Create delicate floral silhouettes, detailed leaf impressions, or imaginative compositions while discovering the unique beauty of traditional cyanotype printing.
