Schmincke Extra Soft Pastels are handmade artist soft pastels produced with especially high concentrations of finest artists’ pigments for intense, velvety colour application. With minimal binder content and an exceptionally soft consistency, the pastels are suitable for blending, layering, tonal transitions, and expressive pastel techniques.

They are organised using a tonal gradation system that allows many colours to be available in multiple lightness and darkness variations within the same colour family. Rather than offering only a single version of a colour, Schmincke produces carefully stepped tonal values that help artists create smoother transitions, balanced colour relationships, and controlled shading within pastel work.

Each pastel colour is identified by a colour number and a tonal gradation code. The tonal gradations are indicated by letters such as B, D, H, M, and O, with each letter representing a different value within the same colour family. Darker tonal values are represented by earlier gradation letters, while lighter tonal values are represented by later gradations. This system allows artists to move naturally from deep shadow tones to lighter highlights without changing to an unrelated colour.

Darker variations may be used for shadow passages and depth, while lighter variations of the same colour can be layered for mid-tones, soft transitions, highlights, and atmospheric effects. Because the tonal values remain within the same colour family, the transitions appear more harmonious and controlled across the artwork. The broad tonal structure of the Schmincke Extra Soft Pastel range is one of the defining characteristics of the collection and contributes to its suitability for professional pastel applications requiring subtle tonal modelling and refined colour transitions.

Production process: The unusual formulation which guarantees a unique strong colour application, also requires an equally unique production process: traditional craftsmanship. In this traditional and time-consuming process, screw presses are used first to shape the pre-kneaded dough into round strands which are afterwards removed by hand and cut into the right length in wire-strung frames. The sticks are still damp and are left to air dry for 8 days before they are individually labelled by hand.  Due to the particularly fine formulas, machine production of our pastels is not possible – the precious sticks could break.
