Tom’s Studio designed the Field Mouse for the moments between desk sessions: the to-do list written in a rush, the last-minute birthday card, the shopping list ticked off item by item. Described by Tom’s Studio as being designed to “tuck onto your keys,” it is small, light and securely capped, built for the reality of pockets and bags rather than a pen case.

Despite its compact form, the Field Mouse uses the same Japanese-made writing tip as the Tom’s Studio Wren — a writing experience Tom’s Studio describes as similar to a rollerball or ballpoint, but without a ball laying ink on the page. The absence of a ball mechanism eliminates the blobbing and line inconsistency that can occur with conventional ballpoints. The Field Mouse is designed to be endlessly refillable, reducing the waste produced by single-use pens.

Refilling is straightforward: unscrew the base of the pen using the cap as a tool, remove the fibre-filled reservoir from the base piece, dip the reservoir into your chosen ink, and allow capillary action to draw the ink up. Replace the reservoir in the pen and allow a moment for the ink to fill the tip before writing.

The Field Mouse is compatible with Tom’s Studio Fibre Tip Ink (Midnight is the ink supplied as a sample with the pen), and with most fountain pen inks. Shimmer inks, iridescent inks, and acrylic-binder inks should not be used, as they can clog the tip. Over time, brass components will develop a natural patina; Tom’s Studio guides polishing and maintaining the finish if preferred. The tip and reservoir are both sold as separate replacement parts when needed.
