Gamblin Galkyd and Galkyd Lite are popular painting mediums designed to enhance the working properties of oil paints. Both are alkyd-based, meaning they speed up drying times while maintaining the flexibility and durability of your paint layers.

Galkyd (with a 24 hour drying time) is known for its high viscosity, making it ideal for creating a smooth, enamel-like finish. It increases transparency and allows artists to build rich, glossy layers of color.  When used in greater proportions with oil color, Galkyd will level brush-strokes, creating an enamel-like surface. Great for creating glazes, apply glazes thinly.

Galkyd Lite (with a 30 hour drying time), on the other hand, has a lower viscosity and a longer working time, making it perfect for glazing or achieving softer, more subtle blending effects. It’s especially favored by artists who prefer a more fluid medium without compromising on faster drying times. When used in moderation with oil colors, Galkyd Lite will retain brushstrokes.

Both Galkyd and Galkyd Lite contain Gamsol. The main difference between Galkyd vs. Galkyd Lite is that Galkyd contains less Gamsol, making it a thicker fluid consistency. Galkyd Lite contains more Gamsol, making it a thinner and more fluid consistency. You can dilute both with additional Gamsol, this is recommended for underpainting and fluid washes. Both mediums are excellent choices for reducing the time between layers and achieving a range of textural and visual effects in your artwork.
