Description
R&F Pigment Sticks® offer artists a direct connection between drawing and traditional oil painting. Rather than squeezing paint from a tube and applying it with a brush, the solid stick can be held in the hand and worked directly across the painting surface. The result is a highly immediate approach that lends itself to loose drawing, broad areas of colour, layering and energetic gestural marks.
Despite their solid format, Pigment Sticks® are genuine oil paint. R&F uses linseed oil, pigment and natural wax, adding only enough wax to allow the paint to retain its stick shape. Their soft consistency makes it possible to create everything from drawn lines and textured marks to broad passages of rich oil colour.
Pigment Sticks® also integrate easily into traditional oil-painting workflows. They can be mixed alongside tube oils, drawn over dried oil paintings or combined with compatible oil-painting mediums. For palette work, the paint can be cut from the stick and manipulated with a palette knife until it reaches a buttery consistency suitable for mixing, brushing or applying with a knife.
Use Pigment Sticks® on grounds appropriate for traditional oil paint. Canvas and paper should be properly sized before use, while suitable rigid supports include prepared panels and other oil-compatible surfaces. Drying behaviour varies according to factors such as the pigment, thickness of application, surface absorbency and environmental conditions.
R&F manufactures its Pigment Sticks® by hand in carefully controlled small batches. The absence of fillers and added driers preserves the distinctive handling characteristics of the paint and gives artists a versatile medium that combines the tactile qualities of drawing with the colour and working possibilities of oil painting.
Safety & Studio Use
Some colours contain pigments that require additional handling precautions, including certain cadmium, cobalt and chromium pigments. Wear gloves or use a suitable barrier cream, particularly where skin is cut or abraded, and wash hands thoroughly after use. Do not eat, drink or smoke while handling artists’ colours.
Linseed-oil-soaked materials can present a combustion risk while drying and should be disposed of safely in accordance with appropriate studio practices. Adequate ventilation should also be used whenever Pigment Sticks® are combined with solvents. Always refer to the relevant product label and Safety Data Sheet for colour-specific safety information.
