The Field Notes Pitch Black collection combines a sophisticated black exterior with a warm Kraft-brown interior, using Field Notes-exclusive duplex cover stock developed with French Paper Co. The inside cover is finished in the brand’s signature Kraft brown, adding a subtle touch of warmth to the otherwise refined black design. A discreet Pitch Black logo is printed on the back cover.
First introduced in 2013, the Pitch Black Dot-Graph Memo Book quickly became one of the brand’s most popular designs. Following several reprints and thoughtful upgrades, the Pitch Black collection has expanded to offer a choice of sizes and interior page styles.
Printing: Proudly printed by eDOC Communications, Mount Prospect, Illinois.
Cover: Custom-made ~320 gsm, French Paper Co. “Pitch Black Duplex” stock, combining “Blacktop” on the exterior with “Packing Brown Wrap” on the interior.
Cover inks: “Stephanite” on the outside and “Dachshund Nose Black” on the inside, printed using soy-based Saphira inks.
Interior pages: 89gsm, Finch Paper Opaque Smooth “Bright White” stock with a fine, one-colour application of “Light Mist Gray” soy-based Saphira ink.
Printing press: Covers and interior pages printed on a Heidelberg Speedmaster XL 105 40-inch, 6-colour press.
Binding: Finished with gloss-black staple wire using a Heidelberg Stitchmaster ST 270 5-pocket saddle stitcher with cover feeder/scorer and Rima RS 10S in-line stacker.
Paper options: Available in Dot-Graph or Ruled formats.
Dot-Graph: 0.47 × 0.47 cm (3/16 × 3/16 inches) grid.
Ruled: 0.64 cm (¼ inch) line spacing.
Typography: Uses the Futura typeface family, designed by Paul Renner in 1927, in collaboration with Monotype.
