A palette knife is a blunt tool used for mixing or applying paint, with a flexible steel blade. It is primarily used for mixing paint colours, paste, other mediums, or for marbling, decorative endpapers and more. The “palette” in the name is a reference to an artist’s palette which is used for mixing oil paint and acrylic paints.
Art knives come primarily in two types:
While palette knives are manufactured without sharpened cutting edges, with prolonged use they may become “sharpened” by the action of abrasive pigments such as earth colours.

LUKAS STUDIO OIL Fine Artists’ oil colour is ideal for demanding artists and students. The oil colours contain only brilliant and valuable pigments with a high lightfastness in high concentration, for exceptional colour intensity and opacity. No colour has a lower lightfastness than 6- 7 on the international 8-step blue wool scale.
A dash (0,5-1,5%) of the finest bleached beeswax as one of the ingredients, gives the colour the famous buttery and short consistency and makes the colour-film less brittle for the restorer. The binders are pure vegetable linseed and sunflower oils of special quality. Free of toxic and caustic pigments. The typical drying time for oil colours amounts on average from 2 to 4 days with thin brushstroke strength of 100 to 120 μm.
48 colours – about 40% of them being single pigmented. The range allows painting directly from the tube with a fine nuance. LUKAS Studio Oil colour can be mixed with all of the LUKAS Oil colours (LUKAS 1862 oil colour, LUKAS Basics oil colour or LUKAS Berlin water mixable oil colour) and with the LUKAS painting mediums for oil colours.
LUKAS STUDIO OIL colours can be used on various painting surfaces, whether on canvases, painting or wooden boards. It is recommended to use a pre-treated painting surface, which is isolated due to its primer, preventing the binder from being absorbed and the colour from losing its shine.

Thin oil paint and clean brushes without pervasive spirits. These solvents can travel by road, sea and air, which makes it an excellent accompaniment if you are going on a painting holiday (depending on the airline).

Gamsol is one of the the safest solvent that allows oil painters to utilize all traditional painting techniques without compromise. Gamsol is special: it is made for products and processes that come into more intimate contact with the body such as cosmetics, hand cleaners, and cleaning foodservice equipment. Gamsol is a petroleum distillate but all the aromatic solvents have been refined out of it, less than .005% remains. Aromatic solvents are the most harmful types of petroleum solvents. In addition, Gamsol’s flashpoint allows it to ship via air cargo as a non-hazardous material.
Primary Uses for Gamsol:
Thinning oil colours. A little goes a long way; stiff oil colours relax immediately when a little Gamsol is added. Be careful not to thin oil colours too much with solvent alone, this can compromise the ability of the paint to form a paint film.
Modifying painting mediums. Our Galkyd line of painting mediums are formulated with Gamsol, so they readily accept Gamsol as a thinning agent. Note: Gamsol should not be added to painting mediums made with natural resins (dammar, copal, mastic). They require strong solvents such as turpentine. Studio clean-up: brushes, palettes, palette knives, etc.
Gamsol is also an excellent medium for blending coloured pencils artwork.
Zellen Modelling Paste is the perfect medium for modelling, building surfaces and creating texture. This coarse paste dries into a flexible transparent relief texture with no shrinking or cracking. Acrylic or oil paint can be added to ‘tint’ the paste for a different effect. A variety of tools can be used to mould, sculpt or create texture and a plastic palette knife is a go-to tool when using a stencil. Paint scrapers can be used to create interesting patterns on the paste. It is excellent for creating impasto textures and can be applied to any semi-porous, grease-free surface. Use either canvas or a 300gsm paper which can take the weight of the modelling paste.
