Drafting film was traditionally used by draftsmen and architects to draw plans on, but the film has gained popularity amongst artists as it is generally more durable than paper. It is resistant to tearing but can show dents and creases if not handled correctly. When using mixed media the film will also not shrink or warp like organic paper.

These sheets of double matte polyester drafting film have a frosted or translucent look and a smooth surface. Although these sheets are normally used for drafting plans, they can be used as a surface for oil and acrylic paints, watercolour, coloured pencils, graphite, charcoal, chalk, markers and gelly rolls. Both sides can be used to work on, creating an interesting effect.

When working with drafting film, take care not to touch the film too much, as your hands may leave marks that will be difficult to remove.

This drafting film is superb for creating preparatory drawings in graphite with a very fine pencil. I will draw up different element I want to use in my composition and then layer them over each other and move them around till I’m satisfied with the layout. It is also a great substrate for pencil crayon giving an almost vellum-like finish. It is extremely durable. One just needs to take care of touching it too much with your hands, it can leave marks that are difficult to remove.

This paper/film is a learning curve…I was hoping to recreate a true copy from a very intricate piece that was drawn in the 90’s…but for some reason the ink from my TG1-S Faber-Castell pens was spreading…but this might have been from cleaning them after so many years of not using them..though the performed fine on both my old drafting paper and normal paper…I had the same problem with nib pens and ink…it doesn’t act like the drafting paper that I had at Inscapes when I did the interior design course…so for very…very fine detail pen drawings…I’m talking 0.13 and 0.10 Rotring pens..no…but coloured pencils…that’s another story and one that I am learning about…BUT..be careful about rubbing out…the tooth flattens easily…and will leave a shiny surface…but this too can be used to an advantage ..It’s a fascinating paper to work with…especially as it works well 2 dimensional..you work on both the front and the back…it works well with alcohol marker for back ground work on the reverse side…lot’s to learn but very much worth a go…
