Series 4750
Princeton’s synthetic squirrel brushes, like their synthetic sable cousins, were designed to surpass their natural counterparts. Neptune™ is their softest and thirstiest synthetic brush, delivering oceans of colour. Princeton’s Neptune™ brushes hold colour excellently and come in a large range of shapes, including mottlers and quills. Most of the Neptune™ squirrel brushes have traditional solid wood watercolour handles, except the wash brushes, which are made of the beautiful sea glass that is the signature of the Princeton aquarelle brush line.

I got some quills, and round brushes. It is a very thirsty brush, with which one can make juicy strokes. I use mine for washes, and it works wonderfully. It is a synthetic brush but almost as soft as real squirrel, which is the softest hair available. This is an excellent alternative for those who are against animal cruelty, and want an environment friendly brush. Since it is imported from the USA and our Rand is very weak against the Dollar it is pricey. Escoda sells real squirrel hair and the prices are not much higher. Escoda might be a better choice for those who rather want real bristles. Therefore, I give this range only four stars.

I adore these brushes. Have been using my trusty size 8 for illustration work for a while, and recently got a size 12 and a dagger too. They are absolutely fantastic for glazing – they glide so smoothly across the paper without disturbing underlying paint, even pigments that lift easily. The water retention is excellent for a synthetic brush and I was blown away by the tip on the dagger. Lots of interesting mark-making! My older brush has held up well considering how much I use it. They are a pleasure to use.

The first time I used the Neptune range I instantly saw the difference they make! My watercolours appear a lot more smoother and blend so beautifully. Especially for beau by synthetic! They are soft and I don’t think I’ll ever use another brush! I got the round in different sizes and the aquerelle and love them!
