Gamblin Relief Inks are professional-quality, oil-based inks developed specifically for relief printmaking techniques such as woodcut, linocut, and letterpress. Known for their vibrant pigmentation and smooth consistency, these inks deliver crisp impressions with bold, saturated colour that holds beautifully on both paper and press.
Formulated in collaboration with printmakers, the range is designed to provide excellent roll-out with minimal tack, making it ideal for both hand-printing and use on traditional presses. The inks stay open on the slab for long sessions, reducing the need to re-ink frequently – a real win for artists working on multi-layer prints or editioning.
Although oil-based, Gamblin Relief Inks can be cleaned up easily with soap and water when used with Gamblin’s relief modifiers, offering the performance of traditional oil inks with added convenience. This makes them an excellent choice for studios looking to reduce solvent use without compromising on quality.
The palette includes strong primaries, deep blacks, subtle earth tones, and a transparent base for layering or extending colour. All inks are mixable, allowing endless possibilities for custom blends and tonal variations.

When using an additive process Relief Inks may be a better fit as they are softer than etching inks and will transfer even the faintest of ink tones. Relief Inks also work extremely well with a brush or knife.
Black Ink for MONOTYPE and MONOPRINT Either Gamblin Etching or Relief Inks can be used for monotype. Etching inks work best for reductive techniques where the image is revealed by wiping or scraping ink from the surface of the inked plate. This is because etching inks are stiffer than a relief printing ink and inherently want to remain on the surface of the plate, which allows the artist to have more control over how much ink is removed.
