Grafstone pencils offer a flexible drawing tool, made from a pure solid piece of graphite in the shape of a pencil but without the wood casing. It can be used as a conventional pencil or it can be broken into chunks and used more expressively. They can be sharpened to extremely fine points or used blunt, for bolder mark making,

The raw graphite of Caran d’Ache Grafstone pencils is made from a homogenous material to achieve excellent results. Because they contain more graphite, Grafstone pencils are slightly heavier than normal pencils. Many artists find these tools more balanced than a normal wood-cased pencil. Caran D’Ache pencils are made to the highest quality to ensure optimal strength and protection of the lead. Best results are achieved by looking after them – avoid dropping or bending the pencils as this can damage the lead.

More about Caran d’Ache: 

Caran d’Ache comes from the word  “karandash” which is the Russian term for “pencil” and in turn comes from the Turkish root “kara tash” which refers to black stone – the origins of graphite.

This natural material found in the mountains of Switzerland gave rise to the first Swiss pencil factory set up in Geneva in 1915. Nine years later, in the hands of its founder, the visionary Arnold Schweitzer, it took the name of the famous illustrator became known as Caran d’Ache.

Located in Geneva since its inception in 1915, the Maison is committed to creating and developing writing and drawing instruments combining the finest materials with the most advanced, innovative skills.
