Description

Glazing Medium:

Did you know you can use traditional glazing techniques with acrylic paint as well? Amsterdam glazing medium allows you to add those even, transparent layers to your work. This medium makes your paint smoother, easier to spread and more even (without visible brush strokes). The medium is self-leveling, so it helps you create those beautiful glazing layers to achieve an optical color mixing effect with the colors of the underlying layers. Glazing works especially well with transparent colors in the final layers of your painting. Adding a medium also makes the paint film even more elastic and flexible.

Product features:

  • Available with a Gloss (018) and Matt (017) finish.
  • Mix with transparent colors for an optimal glazing effect.
  • Milky white when wet, dries colorless and transparent.
  • Slightly reduces drying time.
  • Increases the flexibility of the paint film.
  • Can be thinned with a small amount of water.
  • Waterproof when dry.
  • Available in a 75ml bottle.

Gel Medium:

If you’re looking for some extra volume and dimension, try mixing your acrylic colors with one of the Amsterdam gel mediums. These mediums offer a sharper, pastier texture and give your work, depending on the selected gel, a glossier or more matt finish. Adding more of this medium will result in higher transparency of the colour and increased viscosity. Due to their adhesive properties, these gels also work well for different mixed media techniques.

Product features:

  • Available in gel, heavy gel and extra heavy gel versions.
  • Composition: acrylic resin dispersion, thickening agents.
  • Makes acrylic paint thicker and pastier.
  • Allows application of extremely thick layers of acrylic color in one stroke.
  • Also suitable for mixed media techniques.
  • Milky white when wet, dries colourless and transparent.
  • Waterproof when dry.
  • Makes the brush stroke very sharp.
  • Allows extremely thick layers of acrylic paint to be applied in one go.
  • Also suitable for bonding all kinds of materials.
  • Process above 10ºC.
  • Store frost-free.

Available options:

    • Gel Medium Gloss (094) – 250ml tube.
    • Heavy Gel Medium Gloss (017) or Matt (020) – 250ml tub.
    • Extra Heavy Gel Medium Gloss (021) – 250ml tube.

Acrylic Medium:

Acrylic colors can easily be thinned using water. If, however, you use large amounts of water, only a small amount of acrylic resin will be left on your work. The pigments will not be properly protected and might smudge once the water has evaporated. It also makes the paint film thinner and more fragile, which increases the risk of damage and may make adhesion to certain surfaces more difficult. To prevent this from happening, thin your paint using Amsterdam acrylic medium!

An acrylic medium is indispensable for a great end result. Amsterdam acrylic medium adds acrylic resin to your paint to optimally protect the pigments and to help you easily spread your paint, while retaining the durability of the paint film. Your paint will last longer since it’s easier to distribute, so you can cover more of your surface with the same amount of paint. Adding more of this medium will result in higher transparency of the color.

Product features:

  • Available in glossy and matt finishes.
  • Increases flexibility of the paint film.
  • Does not affect the drying time of the paint.
  • Milky white when wet, dries colorless and transparent.
  • Waterproof when dry.
  • Available in a 75ml (Gloss (012); Matt (117)) or 250ml (Gloss (012)) bottle.

Slow Drying Medium (071):

Using a wet-on-wet method must be done quickly when working with acrylic paint. Buy yourself some extra time to create stunning color transitions, blend colors smoothly and allow yourself to work on the same area for longer using Amsterdam slow drying medium. This medium extends the drying time of your paint, depending on the amount added. This pre-mixed, ready-to-use medium contains acrylic resin, which makes it easy and safe to use in any quantity. Adding a large amount of slow drying medium will also affect the paint’s transparency and degree of gloss.

Product features:

  • Extends the drying time of acrylic paint.
  • Can be mixed with acrylic paint in any ratio.
  • Can be thinned with water.
  • Increases the transparency and degree of gloss, depending on the amount.
  • Can be varnished after at least three days of drying.
  • Available in a 75ml bottle.

Thickening Medium (040):

For a sharper, more visible brush stroke, add Amsterdam thickening medium to your paint. Create a luscious, thick consistency by adding just a small amount of this medium to your Amsterdam acrylic colors. This medium does not affect the color intensity or opacity of the paint since you only need a small amount.

Use a painting knife to thoroughly mix a small amount of the thickening medium with your paint. After this, you can paint with a brush. Be careful not to use too much of the thickening medium, this will result in rubber or gum-like paint that is unusable.

Product features:

  • Add to acrylic paint in very small quantities to increase viscosity.
  • Reduces gloss.
  • Only suitable for use with acrylic colors.
  • Clean utensils with water.
  • Apply at temperatures above 10° C and store free of frost.
  • Available in a 250ml tube.

Acrylic Varnish:

Protect your work against dust, dirt and other external influences with Amsterdam acrylic varnishes. Give your work the protection it deserves so it lasts a long time. Amsterdam polishes come in spray cans and bottles and are available in matte and  gloss finishes. These varnishes provide a durable, flexible, reversible, non-yellowing sealing coat, not only for acrylic paints, but for oil paint as well!

Before applying varnish, read the following tips:

  • Both the varnish and the paint should be at room temperature during application and drying. If not, a white cast may appear on your work, as temperature changes can cause condensation under the varnish layer.
  • Shake well before use. Apply the varnish in a thin layer, holding the spray can about 40 cm from your work. Use the varnish only in a well-ventilated room.
  • Make sure to apply the polish in one coat. Applying multiple coats may cause inconsistencies in gloss.
  • Apply after the paint film has completely dried (4 to 5 days for normal thickness layers).
  • Shake well before use.

Product features:

  • Protective layer for acrylic and oil.
  • Drying in a few hours.
  • Does not yellow.
  • Can be diluted with petroleum spirit.
  • Rinse the brushes with petroleum spirit.
  • Flammable (extremely flammable in aerosol).
  • Dried varnish layers can be removed with petroleum spirit.
  • Available with Gloss (114) or Matt (115) finish.
  • Available as aerosol in 400ml spray cannisters or liquid in 75ml bottles.

Acrylic Remover (013):

Dried-up acrylic paint has ruined many good brushes, but not anymore! With Amsterdam acrylic remover, you can clean your brushes even after the paint has dried. This completely biodegradable medium allows dried acrylic paint to dissolve from brushes and other painting tools.

How to use:

  • Pour some of the liquid in a glass jar to a level that will cover part of the ferrule (metal part), put your brush in and leave it to soak for an hour. Be careful not to add too much remover, as this will also dissolve the varnish on the handle of your brush.
  • Clean your brush afterwards using soap and water.
  • Return the hair into its original shape, let it dry completely laying down flat and your brush is ready to be used again.

Product features:

  • Removes acrylic paint from brushes and other tools.
  • Completely biodegradable.
  • Not suitable for removing dried layers of varnish, doing so may damage the acrylic paint.
  • Can cause skin irritation.
  • Available in a 75ml bottle.

Acrylic Retarder (070):

Amsterdam Acrylic Retarder can be mixed with any acrylic colour to vary the effect of your finished piece. This auxiliary medium increases the drying time of acrylic paint by a maximum of 20%. It evaporates completely from the acrylic paint when dried. Use sparingly, the thinned paint may not contain more than 5% Amsterdam acrylic retarder. Can be thinned with water. Available in a 75ml bottle.
