Pfeil offers four grades. No. 1 is the starting grade , coarse enough to address initial edge-setting on a new tool, or to repair an edge that has been significantly damaged or rolled. This is the stone that works fastest and removes the most metal per stroke, making it effective for re-establishing a bevel after a tool has been misused or neglected.

No. 2 picks up from No. 1 for general honing and mid-stage refinement: finer than the starter stone, but still cutting with enough speed to refine a bevel that has already been shaped.

No. 3 is a fine grade that reduces the scratch pattern left by the earlier stones and begins to polish the bevel surface. The scratch pattern matters because each grade leaves microscopic grooves in the steel; the progression through finer grades narrows and refines those grooves until they are so fine that the bevel surface begins to reflect light.

No. 4 is the finest stone in the Pfeil Arkansas range, used for the final polishing pass before finishing on a leather strop. This grade brings the edge to its keenest natural-stone sharpness , the kind of edge that enters lino or wood without resistance and holds that quality through a sustained working session.
