During the height of the Industrial Revolution, the mass production of artists’ materials began replacing traditional workshop methods. As handcrafted paints disappeared, artists soon missed the richness, brilliance, and permanence of classic formulations. Among those concerned was Jacques Blockx I, a Belgian chemist and colour enthusiast. Driven to revive the uncompromising quality of historic paints, he set out to formulate oil colours that met the highest artistic standards. In 1865, he founded the BLOCKX company in Belgium, dedicating his laboratory to the precise study of pigments and binders.
