Description
R&F Encaustic Medium is a fundamental material for artists working with encaustic painting, offering exceptional versatility for glazing, layering, surface preparation, and sculptural techniques. Formulated from 100% USP-grade beeswax and damar resin, this unpigmented medium can be used independently or combined with R&F Encaustic Paints to expand creative possibilities.
When added to encaustic paint, the medium extends the colour and increases its transparency, allowing artists to create delicate glazes, subtle colour transitions, and luminous layered effects. The amount of medium added determines the degree of translucency, providing greater control over colour intensity and depth.
The medium can also be applied directly to a painting surface to build up layers, create texture, or establish a foundation for subsequent applications of encaustic paint. Its natural translucency allows underlying drawings, marks, and imagery to remain partially visible. Thin applications provide greater clarity, while thicker layers introduce a soft, veiled appearance that creates a sense of optical depth.
Beyond traditional painting, R&F Encaustic Medium is suitable for mixed-media and sculptural applications. Artists can use it to create dimensional surfaces, cast wax forms, and experiment with layered compositions.
For application, melt the medium on a temperature-controlled heated palette or in a suitable palette cup. Gently warm the painting surface before applying the molten medium with a brush or other appropriate tool. Each applied layer should be carefully fused to the layer beneath to ensure proper adhesion.
Whether used to extend colours, develop transparent glazes, build textured surfaces, or explore three-dimensional techniques, R&F Encaustic Medium provides a versatile foundation for creative expression in encaustic art.
