Gansai Tambi Watercolours are traditional Japanese handcrafted paints for professional artists and crafters. These high-calibre watercolours are blendable with a creamy-smooth feel that show up beautifully on dark paper. The rich and intense colours are lightfast, so your painting will remain vivid. Water-based pigment paint can be highly opaque when used solely as a gouache but can also become more transparent depending on the amount of water added for dilution.

I like the Kuretake Gansai Tambi paint as i can play around with all the beautiful colours given. They are the best watercolour set you can learn from. I recommend the gansai tambi paint for artists who are starting out with watercolours where the paint does not get in your way. Also make sure you use good watercolour paper, a good beginner and professional watercolour paper would be the Prime art 300gsm Water, Multi media pad.

Gansai Tambi is not traditional Western watercolours and work best on bamboo watercolour paper or cellulose paper. Very transparent for some colours and quite opaque for others. Interesting to use in sketchbooks and for general illustrations or background work. The big pans are great for brushes and re-wets very easily. Good option for something different. Do not recommend for beginners, or artists not familiar with watercolours in general, as the experience is different.

Really good quality watercolour set. I purchased the 36 set, and being a Wildlife Artist and Art Teacher, I can say that these paints can be layered the same as gouache or acrylic. I used these paints on the Fabriano 1264 300gsm watercolour paper. For realistic paintings, paint a dark base colour with the Gansai Tambi paints – no need to wait to layer on lighter fur colours – they do not get all muddy if used as gouache or acrylic! It’s really great trying out these paints and my students in Asia are having fun with them too!
