Gamblin Oil Painting Ground provides a strong, bright, non-absorbent foundation ideal for oil painting. Formulated with alkyd resin, titanium dioxide, and calcium carbonate, this ground offers exceptional performance: titanium dioxide ensures excellent opacity, while calcium carbonate adds tooth for superior adhesion. Compared to acrylic gesso primers, Gamblin Ground creates a brighter, less-absorbent layer, helping oil paints maintain their color saturation more effectively. Its lower absorbency also facilitates reductive painting techniques, enabling artists to wipe back into the white surface of the ground when desired. With its higher pigment load, Gamblin Ground is thicker than acrylic gesso, requiring fewer coats and a different application approach. It should be applied in 1–2 thin layers. Additionally, it can be used to cover old paintings, offering an economical way to reuse canvases or panels when a painting doesn’t meet expectations.

Gamblin Ground can also be applied directly over an acrylic-primed canvas or panel, resulting in a bright white surface that reduces absorbency and enhances color vibrancy. Artists can mix oil colors into the ground to create tinted surfaces, opening new creative possibilities. Starting with a tinted ground, rather than a blank white canvas, can inspire fresh approaches to your work.
