German-made, Stabilo Carbothello Pastel Pencils are world-famous for their quality, high pigmentation with excellent lightfastness, and being partially water-soluble, offering the artist a wider range of use. The opaque, chalk-pastel colours blend beautifully and erase easily. They can be dry-blended or smudged with either the fingertips or a blending stump to create a variety of artistic effects. And due to their high pigmentation, dramatic results can be achieved on dark backgrounds and delicate papers.

Partially water-soluble, the pigments can also be worked with brush and water, the contours remaining visible. The white pastel pencil is especially ideal to lighten or highlight areas or outlines.  The diameter of the lead is large and semi-soft but can be sharpened to a fine point for details and lettering.

  • Wonderfully dry and dusty stroke, just like charcoal.
  • High pigmentation – great luminosity and opacity.
  • Excellent colour-fastness and colour brilliance.
  • Wooden shaft protects the lead from breaking.
  • Mix, blend and smudge dry.
  • Partially water soluble; contours remain visible.
  • Lead diameter: 4.4 mm.
  • Available in Tin Sets of 12, 24, 36, & 60 as well as a Wooden Box Set of 60.

    I was sent some of these pencils to try out in the Premium Tester box, and I am blown away with how much one can achieve, both in fine detail as well as “underpainting” or tonal laydown with them. I used Canson Mi-Teintes Pastel paper but would have preferred Clairefontaine Pastel Mat. I loved ever minute of my Playtime Fun project with these. Having a background in oil painting as well, I was pleasantly surprised how much these react the same way oils do. One can layer lights over darks and darks over lights until you achieve your desired hue. I would highly recommend these for artists who, like myself, are addicted to realism and want a pencil that makes that possible!

    Looking forward to expanding my tool box with these in 2019 as I have a cheetah waiting to materialize on paper.
