Description
DANIEL SMITH Extra Fine Watercolors made their debut in 1993. Their vision in the formulation of a new line of watercolours was two-fold: First and foremost, to produce watercolours that were great in lightfastness and permanence. Second, to offer a selection of truly unique colours to artists.
Today as in 1993, the DANIEL SMITH Watercolours are “formulated to meet and exceed the highest industry standards for the manufacture of artist’s paints”, and every batch made is tested and analyzed for its performance qualities:
- Lightfastness.
- Colour value.
- Tinting strength.
- Clarity.
- Vibrancy.
- Undertone.
- Particle size.
- Density.
- Viscosity.

Daniel smith watercolors are one of the best watercolors. I have seen videos of people reviewing these and you still do not get brands that does the same with their watercolors as Daniel Smith does. I recommend trying these after you tried watercolors and have some sort of knowledge over them. I tried their primary colors as well as some of their Prima Tek colors. They are the most beautiful paints I have used. You also need a small amount to get far, they will keep you more than 3 years depending on how much you paint. If you ask yourself, “Why are they this expensive?” Believe me you ARE paying for quality. I bought mine in small quantities so you can build up your collection over time. I prefer using other watercolor brands in combination with their Prima Tek brands because it gives a beautiful Granulating effect for backgrounds and bigger areas.

Daniel Smith is up there with the best of the best artist quality watercolours. The colour selection is beyond amazing and pigment sourcing/information is great. I started with importing these, but so glad Artsavingsclub also have them on offer – because my collection is expanding continuously. Moonglow is gorgeous, however do your own lightfast tests regarding the paint. Avoid Lapiz Lazuli, if you expect the same pigment load as other tubes.
Most of my palettes consists of Daniel Smith and I cannot recommend them more. If you want to invest in watercolours, I would choose Daniel Smith first in South Africa.

I absolutely love Daniel Smith watercolours! Their quality is outstanding. The granulation from the paints creates beautiful textures without too much effort required. They are pricey but worth every penny.

I bought a tube of enviro friendly brown iron oxide and a tube of neutral tint and I squeezed them into a pan each and use them just about every time I paint! They reactivate well and the colour payout is beautiful! I’m glad I made the purchase!

I took advice online when I started watercolour painting in lockdown in 2020. I was a beginner and really had no idea about pigments , saturation and granulation, but I was intrigued and bought a few tubes. I was so blown away that I have become a ‘paint snob’, but with good reason, once you have tried quality such as these paints, you cannot go back. Treat yourself, dont keep thinking when you get better you will get better quality paints (or paper) I promise once you use better quality your work will instantly get better.
