Brush Care & Cleaning Tips

After you clean your brushes, always reshape them to their original form.

ROSEMARY&CO CLOSE UP HOG
  • Cleaning watercolor brushes is straightforward. Just rinse under the tap, then give them a gentle scrub with a bar of soap in your hand. Squeeze out the water, reshape, and store them upright. Give them a little conditioning now and then for extra longevity.
  • With acrylics, it’s all about not letting the paint dry on the brush! Wipe off the excess paint before rinsing, and use soap if needed to get them nice and clean. Acrylic is tough on brushes, so we generally recommend synthetic bristles for durability.
  • For oil paints, skip the solvents if you can. Instead, clean with a light oil (linseed or even vegetable oil), then wash with a gentle dish soap and reshape. The oil conditions the brushes, keeping them in good shape longer.

Brush fibers will naturally change color with time and use, but don’t worry—this doesn’t impact performance. If synthetic brushes lose their shape, try dipping them briefly in hot water to bring them back. Natural hair brushes also appreciate a bit of conditioner from time to time, which keeps them soft and flexible.

When you receive your Rosemary & Co brushes, you might notice the heads are set in a bit of Gum Arabic. This isn’t paint—just a gentle serum we use to protect the bristles during shipping. To remove it, give your brush a quick rinse under lukewarm water, then press the bristles between your fingers to clear it out. Easy.
