R&F Blending Medium is a versatile, pigment-free medium designed to complement R&F Pigment Sticks® and enhance oil and cold wax painting techniques. Essentially an R&F Pigment Stick® without the pigment, this medium allows artists to extend colours, increase transparency, create glazes and blend colours directly on the painting surface. Available in formulations with or without drier, R&F Blending Medium offers greater control over paint consistency, transparency and drying time. The version with drier contains a small amount of cobalt manganese drier to accelerate drying, making it particularly useful when working with slower-drying oil colours. Suitable for glazing, blending and creating surface effects, R&F Blending Medium is available in both stick and jar formats.

Product features:

  • Pigment-free formulation based on R&F Pigment Sticks®.
  • Extends oil colours and increases transparency without introducing additional pigment.
  • Ideal for glazing, blending, layering and creating translucent colour effects.
  • Can be mixed directly with R&F Pigment Sticks® or applied to the painting surface.
  • Suitable for use in oil painting, cold wax techniques and selected encaustic surface applications.
  • Can be used as a release layer to help remove excess Pigment Stick® from cooled encaustic surfaces.

Description

R&F Blending Medium is an essential companion to R&F Pigment Sticks®, offering artists greater flexibility when working with oil colours, cold wax painting and mixed-media surface techniques. Formulated using the same basic medium as R&F Pigment Sticks® but without pigment, it allows colours to be extended, blended and manipulated while maintaining the characteristics of the original oil paint.

When incorporated into R&F Pigment Sticks®, Blending Medium increases transparency and creates smooth, translucent glazes. Artists can mix a small amount of the medium with their chosen colour using a palette knife, then apply the mixture directly to the painting surface. This technique is particularly effective for building transparent layers, softening colour transitions and developing depth in oil and cold wax paintings.

R&F Blending Medium can also be used to create distinctive surface effects over encaustic paintings. When applied as a thin layer over a cooled encaustic surface, it acts as a release barrier that helps prevent oil colour from staining the underlying wax. Pigment Stick® can then be applied over the surface and selectively wiped away to reveal textures, fine details and recessed areas, creating rich patina effects.

R&F Blending Medium Without Drier provides the standard pigment-free formulation for artists who prefer working without added drying agents. It is suitable for blending colours, extending paint and developing transparent layers.

R&F Blending Medium With Drier contains a small amount of cobalt manganese drier to help accelerate the drying process. This formulation is particularly beneficial when working with slower-drying Pigment Stick® colours. Because the addition of a drier may affect colour, R&F recommends using this version beneath a layer of Pigment Stick®.

Both formulations are available in convenient stick formats for direct application and jars for palette mixing or larger painting applications.

Whether used for subtle glazing, expressive blending, encaustic patina effects or controlled layering, R&F Blending Medium provides a practical way to expand the creative possibilities of R&F Pigment Sticks® and traditional oil painting techniques.
