Options:
L – Long Handle The L-handle rests in the palm and is guided with the fingers, designed for the controlled, light forward pressure of linocut work on soft and medium lino.

• • L 5/3 – small shallow sweep gouge: used for curved shallow channels, and carving smooth, rounded contours.
  • L 5/8 – moderate gouge, 8mm: mid-area clearing, open backgrounds, flowing texture.
  • L 7/4, L 7/6, L 7/10 –  deep gouge: bold background clearing and expressive texture.
  • L 9/2, L 9/5 – narrow veiner: defined veiner lines, hatching, fine linear detail.
  • L 11/0.5, L 11/1, L 11/2, L 11/3 – finest veiner: thread-fine to fine lines, crosshatching, hair, and texture work.
  • L 12/1, L 12/4 – 60° V-tool: sharp angular grooves, outlines, lettering, crosshatching.
  • L 12a/4 – 60° V-tool gouge featuring a short bent (cranked) shaft and a 4 mm wide cutting edge, designed for precision carving, sharp angular grooves, outlines, and lettering.
  • L 15/2 – 90° V-tool: open, wide-angle V-groove for decorative and bold outline work.

B – Block Handle The B-handle is shorter and more compact, concentrating force directly at the cutting edge. Used with firm hand pressure or with the Pfeil Wooden Mallet for harder block surfaces.

• • • B 1/12 – flat chisel: level, square-bottomed cuts and surface clearing.
    • B 4/12 – shallow gouge: wide, controlled shallow clearing in harder block materials.
    • B 5/12 – shallow U gouge with a wide cutting edge, controlled shallow clearing for defining gentle contours.
    • B 7/14 – shallow U-shaped sweep, built for heavy-duty relief printmaking, large mark-making, and rapid background clearing.
    • B 7L/12 – deep gouge with extended profile: bold, sweeping material removal.
    • B 8/10 – deep U-gouge: aggressive deep channels and rapid clearing.
    • B 8a/10 – short-bent (spoon) angled shaft and a 10mm wide, curved No. 8 U-gouge profile.
    • B 9/7, B 9/10 — narrow veiner: defined veiner lines in harder materials.
    • B 11/7 — finest veiner: fine line work and close-detail texture in harder block surfaces.
    • B 12/8 — 60° V-tool: sharp angular lines, outlines, and lettering in woodblock.
    • B 15/6 — 90° V-tool: open, wide-angle V-groove for decorative line work in block.

L series:
Standard size tools, suited to fine detail work, ideal for lino but usable on wood too.

B series:
Larger tools with a bigger handle and wider cutting edge, built for both lino and wood, better suited to broader marks and clearing larger areas faster.

– a = Short bent (spoon) shaft.
– L = Long bent shaft.
– s = Skewed cutting edge.
– F = Fishtail blade.

– No. 3 to No. 10 = Gouges (U shaped).
– No. 11 = Veiner (Deep U-shaped).
– No. 12 = V-tool, 60° (Sharp tip).

– No. 14 = V-tool, 55° (Rounded tip).

Sharpening and care
All Pfeil tools arrive with a manufacturer’s edge. Hone lightly on an Arkansas stone before first use. For all curved profiles, follow flat-stone honing with the Pfeil Arkansas Gouge Slip Stone on the inside bevel to remove the wire burr a flat stone creates.
