The Pfeil Wooden Carving Mallet is a traditional round-head striking mallet for use with Pfeil block cutters, carving gouges, and chisels. The rounded wooden head distributes striking force evenly regardless of the exact angle of impact , unlike a metal hammer, which demands precise alignment with each blow. Available in 60mm and 80mm head diameters to suit different tool sizes and material densities.

Product Features:

  • Available in 60mm and 80mm head diameters.
  • Round wooden head for consistent force distribution at any impact angle.
  • 60mm: lighter weight for finer control and less fatiguing work in softer materials.
  • 80mm: greater striking weight for harder materials and larger tools requiring more driving force.
  • Designed for use with Pfeil block cutters, carving gouges, and chisels.
  • Swiss-made by Pfeil in Adelboden.

Description

A wooden carving mallet is the correct striking tool for carving gouges and block cutters, and the reasons matter for anyone building a proper printmaking or woodcarving setup. A metal hammer delivers a sharp, percussive blow that can crack handles over time and sends jarring vibration through the hand, wrist, and arm over the course of a long session. A wooden mallet transfers force in a softer, more absorbed way — giving the carver a feel for how much energy actually reaches the tool, and reducing both the risk of handle damage and the cumulative fatigue of a long session.

The round head design matters for practical, session-to-session reasons. A cylindrical or rectangular hammer head requires you to square the face of the head precisely against the handle of the tool with every blow , even a slight off-angle strike delivers less force and feels wrong. A round head delivers consistent force from any contact point on its surface, so you can maintain your attention on the tool and the block rather than on the mechanics of the striking motion.

The 60mm head diameter suits lighter work: soft and medium lino blocks, softer woodblock printing materials, finer tools and chisels where too heavy a blow would remove more material than intended. The 80mm head is heavier , it drives more material per blow, appropriate for harder woodblock printing surfaces, larger gouges and chisels, and sustained clearing work where the weight of the mallet head does useful work with each stroke.

Both mallets are produced by Pfeil in Switzerland, the same company that has been making the tools these mallets are designed to strike since 1905.
