Description
Schmincke has produced professional artists’ mediums for over 140 years in Erkrath, Germany. The Oxgall (article 50031) belongs to Schmincke’s comprehensive AQUA series of watercolour mediums, and it is one of the most established mediums in the professional watercolour painter’s toolkit.
Purists among watercolour painters only need water as a painting medium. However, Schmincke’s AQUA series watercolour mediums enable new creative techniques and effects. Oxgall addresses a specific and common problem: many watercolour papers, particularly those with a hard sizing or a smooth press, resist water initially and cause paint to bead rather than flow evenly. Adding a drop of oxgall to the water used for diluting paint reduces this surface tension significantly, allowing the pigment to spread smoothly and evenly.
Dissolved oxgall tends to flocculate during long periods of storage. This has no influence on the product’s handling. Shake well before use if any settling is visible. Always use a palette for mixing the medium and paint. Under no circumstances should the medium be poured directly into the paint pans
Perfect For:
- Improving paint flow on hard-sized or smooth-pressed watercolour papers.
- Degreasing lacquered mixing palettes in watercolour paint boxes.
- Watercolour and gouache painting.
