Bockingford® is a beautiful English watercolour paper, traditionally made on a cylinder mould machine at St Cuthbert’s Mill. This is a high-quality paper made using pure materials to archival standards with a beautiful random surface texture that enhances the finished painting.

Its attractive surface is created using natural woolen felts that give it a distinctive random texture. Appreciated for its excellent colour lifting abilities, it is easy to lift the colour wash to get back to the white base paper. This is an extremely forgiving watercolour paper valued by professional and amateur artists around the world.

In addition to watercolour, the paper accepts pastel, gouache, acrylic, pencil, charcoal and pen & ink. The paper can also be used for certain print techniques and bespoke cartons.

Description

Painting

Lighter weight papers (300g/m² and lighter) may benefit from soaking and stretching to avoid the paper cockling (buckling) when applying washes.
Avoid exposing the paper to detergents, as these will affect the paper’s absorbency. The paper’s surface is most vulnerable when wet, and should be handled with care.
Masking Fluid shouldn’t be left on the paper for too long, it becomes harder to remove the longer it’s left, making it impossible to remove without damaging the paper’s surface. Bockingford does not have gelatine surface sizing, so isn’t as robust for masking fluid use.

Understanding the 3 surfaces or textures of watercolour paper

Rough – A pronounced, varied texture, great for a textured loose feel.

Cold-pressed (NOT) – It’s the paper texture in-between rough and hot-pressed paper, having a slightly textured surface this paper is sometimes called NOT.

Hot-pressed (HP) – Watercolour paper with a very smooth surface and almost no tooth. Good for painting detailed paintings and creating very smooth washes.

The Not stands for “Not Hot pressed”
